Simon started to play the trombone at school, progressing through local youth and community groups. In the 1980s he was for several years a member of the world famous Besses o' th' Barn Band. Simon has studied trombone with some of the country's leading professionals, Neville Roberts and Andrew Berryman from the Halle Orchestra, Kevin Price from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Christopher Houlding from Opera North. He is an Associate of the Royal College of Music (ARCM) and a Licentiate of the Trinity College of Music, London (LTCL). Simon's music making has resulted in concert, radio and television performances throughout the UK, Europe and Scandinavia.

As one of the two remaining founder members of Corus Brass Ensemble, Simon was also the Principal Trombone of the Bolton Symphony Orchestra from 1988 to 2013, and regularly freelances throughout the North of England.
